The Assyrian artwork and reliefs at the InterContinental Chicago Magnificent Mile Hotel are indeed magnificent.
Ceilings are painted in dark tones with Celtic and Mesopotamian motifs of the lion, the fish, the eagle and the Assyrian bull to typify the highest powers of nature.
The Hall of Lions is Assyrian in design. Two original marble lions were uncovered with a process known as cornhusk blasting. Traditional sandblasting would have destroyed the intricate details in the design, so cornhusks were ground and blasted at the lions to remove the paint while retaining the details of the carving.
Here’s a review from one guest:
“Woke up to a view of Assyrians on a Chicago building. The hotel confirmed via a printout that explains all of their architecture. What!!”
